A TWIST OF BROADWAY (article first published : 2005-05-28)

In the slick, sophisticated, gently choreographic and highly entertaining style we have come to expect of director David Gouldie in musical theatre productions, A Twist of Broadway at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest makes for an enjoyable evening.

When you have seasoned performers like Karen Van Pletsen and the exceptional David Dennis heading the bill of fare, you know you can relax and enjoy the programme. The surprise of the evening is that Clive Gumede and Nompumelelo Zondi, two young artistes who have come up through the Unilever Young Performers development programme, not only hold their own in such exalted company but stand alongside as equals.

We have seen Clive Gumede in a number of professional productions including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat but he positively shines in this show, particularly singing with Karen in the Andrew Lloyd Webber number, The Last Night of the World.

This is Nompumelelo Zondi’s first professional appearance as a soloist and she made us sit up and take notice with her compelling Summer Time, a testing number if ever there was one.

The show was devised by Karen and she has created a well-balanced programme. From a sultry, almost dangerously slow Broadway Baby, the foursome romp through a medley of American musicals. David and Clive were a delight in Keep it Gay and Safe, Sane and Single while Karen and Nompumelelo changed the mood to poignancy with I Know Him So Well. Other memorable numbers were Little Shop of Horrors, This Joint is Jumpin’, Jailhouse Rock and Circle of Life. I also enjoyed Karen’s moody Maybe This Time and David’s passionate I Am What I Am, which was a highlight.

Kevin Ellis’s costume designs are elegant and tailored and I particularly liked the female costumes in the final sequence. Michael Broderick’s lighting maintains the sophisticated feel and Izanne Greyling’s sound design is well placed, if a little loud at times. At the piano and responsible for the musical arrangements, Burton Naidoo heads a good combo with Bongani Sokhela, Sean Petersen and Josh Beechey.

A few niggles – sitting as close as I was to the stage, I would suggest the underside of the bar stool be smartened up a bit and the table coverings need an under-cloth … and firmer securing!

Tickets R140 include the show ticket and a two-course meal. First Act (starters) offers Peri Peri Steak Fingers (too much Chakalaka Sauce for my taste); Tomato and Basil Soup (very concentrated) and Chilled Cajun Chicken Salad. The Main Attraction comprises a choice of Braised Lamb Shank, Warm Smoked Drakensberg Trout, Calamari and Chicken Casserole and Roasted Vegetable Kebabs. I enjoyed my casserole and there were complimentary remarks about the trout from my table companions. The separate a la carte pudding (Curtain Call) menu offers Bread and Butter Pudding, Vanilla Ice Cream, Strawberry Cheese Cake and Vanilla Parfait.

A Twist of Broadway runs from May 17 to June 19. Performances Tuesday to Saturday at 19h00 for supper with the show at 20h30 (Sunday 12h30 lunch for 14h00 show). Bookings: 031 765 4197. – Caroline Smart
