ALADDIN (article first published : 2004-10-10)

Lovers of Supper Theatre have been feeling left out in the cold lately with the closing of The Langoustine Theatre by the Sea and the Royal Hotel’s Backstage.

However, the Royal Hotel’s back in business again – and with a vengeance – as news has been released that they will host the smash hit adult panto Aladdin from November 5 in the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Grillroom.

Adult pantomimes have become an institution in Durban, having been launched in the Playhouse Cellar, then finding a home at Langoustine’s. The productions offer a celebration of laughter, song and harmless major sexual innuendo.

No adult pantomime would be complete without the elegant legs of Anthony Stonier dressed in outrageous but stylish outfits. He heads the bill as the Genie who will be making a valuable statement for the Safe Sex lobby – “a genie is nothing without a rubber”.

Peter Court, another adult panto favourite, will direct the show and play the role of Widow Twankie. Clare Mortimer plays the Sultana with Marc Kay as Aladdin. Sets are by Peter Court, and costume design by Kit Reading from London.

Tickets R150 include the show and a sumptuous three-course meal. It is advisable to book early on 031 333 6000.
