KZN ON THE AIR FOR SAFM (article first published : 2004-10-1)

KwaZulu-Natal features prominently in the new week-night broadcast schedule just announced for SAfm Radio Ė and contrary to fears expressed by concerned listeners, the arts are not being sidelined.

A bumper magazine programme titled Durban After Dark will be on the air every Wednesday night from eight till midnight featuring health, travel, life trends and music. Hosting the show will be seasoned SAfm presenter, Monica Fairall, who teams up with celebrity broadcaster and TV personality Devi Sankaree Govender and local music fundi Richard Haslop. Editor of artSMart, Caroline Smart, will provide a weekly round-up of local arts events.

The show slots into a rotating format of input from each region: Cape Town takes over Mondays, Johannesburg features on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the classical concert on Thursdays will move between the centres. Each programme will take on a different flavour and feature the specialist contributions associated with each region.

Monica Fairallís longstanding health broadcasts will continue, as will Haslopís eclectic music choice on Roots to Fruits that will fill the final hour of the Durban show. Sankaree Govender is looking forward to bringing her lively style to travel and tourism, as well as exploring the New Horizons segment in the third hour.

The SAfm schedule changes go into effect from October 1 and include ďAM LiveĒ anchor Jon Perlman being joined at the microphone by Nikiwe Bikitsha, and a restructuring of the weekend programmes.

On Saturdays and Sundays, new voices will be heard alongside well-known SAfm regulars such as Jon Gericke, Fiona Ramsay, Will Bernard, Richard Nwamba, Michelle Constant, Peter James Smith and Nothemba Madumo.

Weekend arts coverage will be served by a new two hour programme on Saturday evenings titled Cultural Exchange, and a books, language and documentary omnibus on Sundays from noon till 15h00 called Between the Covers.

Other weekend listening will range from classical requests, sport and outdoor activities to media news, religion, The Editors, jazz and a new hour of youth radio.

Editorís Note: It is estimated that the insert from Caroline Smart will generate much traffic for artSMart and readers are encouraged to look at the site as a viable advertising vehicle.
