MARK BANKS (article first published : 2004-08-13)

Patrons at The Barnayrd Theatre at Gateway are in for a treat when Mark Banks shakes up a cocktail of satire and comedy from September 21 to 26.

South Africas foremost comedian will be serving up his finest for Durban audiences with a lethal mix of his Eks n Doos from South Africa sketches and his renowned stand-up routine.

Ek's n Doos pronounced "Exodus" and translated as "I'm an idiot", pokes fun at South Africans living abroad and offers a coconut shy of characters and situations that makes this country a satirist's smorgasbord. The show contains numerous tongue-in-cheek digs at South African and English politicians, along with an up to the minute United Nations approved lesson on "How to be politically correct while killing people" and a look at South Africa's new telly drama Farm Murders She Wrote starring Angela Landgrab, one of Banks personas. Banks has performed Eks n Doos to packed out audiences nationally as well as in London.

Banks started his career as a solo satirical review artist in the early 80s. His first show We're Not On Top We're Inside, brought him to the comedy stage forefront as an incisive satirical comedy voice in South Africa.Over the past two decades he has never been at a loss for words in response to current events, whether it be social, political, environmental or everyday issues

When asked about the show's daring title and content, Banks said "We have our own unique comedy that allows us to be creative and more importantly, as South Africans we have the ability to laugh at ourselves, so it should not be taken offensively."

The show will be suitable for families. Tickets R90 (no Buy One Get One Free promotion for this production) Bookings and enquiries on 031 566 3045, e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatre.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatre.co.za
