TREE FUNDRAISER (article first published : 2004-06-29)

TREE (Training and Resources in Early Education), a Non Profit organisation formed in 1984, is the largest and most widespread Early Childhood Development Training Agency in South Africa. TREE has played a major role in creating an awareness of the importance of ECD amongst disadvantaged communities, as well as lobbying for the provision of greater resources towards ECD from the state and private sector.

TREE is presently celebrating its 20 Year Anniversary and has organised a fundraising event at the Barnyard Theatre where patrons can enjoy a performance of Diamonds & Dust while generating much-needed funds for TREE.

A highly popular show, Diamonds & Dust became the first ever official theatre production to be endorsed by the Proudly South African campaign when it enjoyed its original eight week sold-out run at The Barnyard Theatre in Gateway. It is a “feel good” production that will tug mercilessly at the heartstrings and features instantly recognisable songs that are now an intrinsic part of daily life. The show starts off in the swinging 40's and 50's with the music of the pennywhistle and progresses to the period of Kwela Jazz, which was played on the saxophone before paying tribute to Miriam Makeba with The Click Song and Pata Pata.

The performance is at 20h00 on July 28 at the Barnyard Theatre, Gateway (doors open at 18h30). Tickets R80 booked through Nirupa at TREE on 031 579 4711. Either take your own food or order from one of the many catering outlets in the vicinity.
