LATINO JIVE (article first published : 2004-06-1)

Latino Jive is Liz Cunningham, Alan Bowen and Paul Botha in a latino jazz inspired show at the Rhumbelow Theatre, the third show from this trio of Durban performers who brought the popular Full Circle and Java Nites shows to the Umbilo venue.

Latino Jive offers an evening of classic jazz standards delivered with a distinctly latin feel together with a sample of some of the exciting original music off Alan and Paul's third album, Intensivo, due for release in September this year. As South of Spain, Alan and Paul have recorded two previous albums of original music.

The show features Liz on vocals and percussion, Alan on vocals, double bass, percussion and guitar and Paul on vocals and guitar. Their onstage history goes back to the 80's where they performed together at the old Fields Hill Hotel in a tribute to Ethel Merman called Don't call me Madam.

In the early 90's, together with Melanie Roberts and Charles Dettman, they formed Jazz Junction, a Manhattan Transfer style show band that launched the very first supper theatre at the Langoustine Restaurant in Durban North. Since then they have individually pursued life, performance and business opportunities that have taken all three to places around the world. On returning to South Africa their choice of musical treat has been to collaborate again for the pleasure of performing together at the Rhumbelow Theatre.

Shows take place on June 4 and 5 at 20h00 and on June 6 at 18h30. The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner.

Tickets R50. Take along food picnic baskets and braais will be available. There is limited secure parking and booking is essential. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). Rhumbelow Theatre is situated in Cunningham Avenue off Bartle Road.

To book contact Roland on 031 205 7602 (h) or 082 499 8636, or email roland@stansell.za.net
