THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW (article first published : 2004-05-12)

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is to host a return season of the world’s most famous rock ‘n roll musical, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, from May 18 to July 25.

The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of two hapless virgins from Denton, Brad Majors and his fiancée Janet Weiss, who lose their way on a dark and stormy night. The only glimmer on the horizon is a light shining from the Frankenstein place.

Here, Dr Frank N Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, is in the midst of one of his maniacal experiments. He’s created the perfect man, a rippling piece of beefcake christened Rocky Horror and intends to put him to good use (his own). The kinky household retinue is presided over by a hunchback henchman named Riff Raff and his incestuous sister Magenta, assisted by a tap dancing groupie-in-residence, Columbia. Although virtue is compromised and finally lost on that fateful night, good finally triumphs over evil.

Durban will be treated to a talented cast of local performers with Paul du Toit (seen at the venue in Glory Days and Rock Me Amadeus) taking the lead role of Frank N Furter, Jason Ralph (La Vida) playing his faithful servant Riff Raff, and Kerry Hiles (Roll Over Beethoven and G String) and David Chevers filling the parts of Janet and Brad.

Seen in the same show at the Gateway venue in 2002, David Sherwood will again narrate the show while Bronwyn Evans and Tessa Denton will revisit their roles as Columbia and Magenta respectively. Newcomer Ryan Laatz will bring muscle-bound Rocky to life, while ex-frontman of local band Perez and Matthew Wilkinson plays Eddie. The roles of the phantoms will be filled by Dean Roberts, Clare Cassidy and Clare Rowland.

Directed by Ian von Memerty, The Rocky Horror Show is being staged and produced by The Barnyard Theatre Productions.

The cult show visited the Gateway venue in 2002 when it was the first worldwide anniversary performance in its 30th year. The Rocky Horror Show has enjoyed a colourful track record in South Africa and the film was banned after four weeks on circuit. When Richard O’Brien created the science fiction spoof musical in 1972, his only vision was a filler show at London’s Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square, which would provide him and a few friends with some employment.

Now, with over 600 productions world-wide, the raunchy and enticing musical kicks off a year-long national tour at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway where it enjoyed a sold-out nine week run previously.

The Rocky Horror Show features the hit songs Time Warp, Hot Patootie, Damn it Janet and Sweet Transvestite, and was made into the hit movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show featuring Susan Sarandon (Janet), Meatloaf (Eddie) and Richard O’Brien himself (as Riff Raff).

Durbanites are encouraged to pack up their party packs and don their finest Rocky get-up (see www.barnyardtheatre.co.za for tips and information) to become the final cast member in this hit show. Tickets R90 (Buy One Get One Free on Tuesday and Sunday). For bookings and enquiries, phone 031 566 3045 or e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatre.co.za
