HAMISH KYD AT THE CELLAR (article first published : 2000-03-9)

Written and performed by Hamish Kyd, The Life & Times of Gopal is a comedy that looks at the funny side of growing up. No stranger to the Cellar, Hamish performed his first professional show The Motown Story there in 1988 and this was followed by Southern Groove in 1990. Both shows received rave reviews and played to packed houses.

In 1991, he co-wrote the Vita Award-winning musical Taxi Jam with Themi Venturas and the same collaboration continued in 1993 when he wrote the script and co-wrote the lyrics for the hit musical Jimbo. He appeared in Themi Venturasí Cantina Tequila on its tour of the Eastern Cape and appeared as a cameo role in Themiís Antony & Cleopatra last year at the Sneddon Theatre.

In 1999, Hamish Kyd founded the Bojangles Entertainers school to train youngsters in the genre of musical theatre. Last year he produced two highly enjoyable student productions, The MJ Experience and The Candyman. Unfortunately The Candyman, which had the potential to run for a long period, was forced to close after six shows when the BAT Centre was burgled and all its equipment stolen.

Hamishís current show The Life and Times of Gopal features Vishnu Gopal, a character he has developed for eight years. He tells the story of Gopalís life from birth until the moment he reaches heaven. The show was successfully performed at the Civic Theatreís Punch-Line Pub four years ago.

Tickets are R30 or R25 for bonus performances. Dinner is optional. Book at Computicket. More details from Pat Loureiro on 369-9505.
