FORUM ON POLITICAL PARTIES’ ARTS POLICIES (article first published : 2004-03-28)

The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) KZN in association with the Network of Arts and Culture SA (NACSA) will host their first forum of the year prior to the April 14 elections in the Main Hall of the BAT Centre at 09h00 on April 3.

All of the parties participating in the up-coming elections have been warmly invited to present a short overview of their party’s policy on arts and culture and the funding of the arts. Minister of Education and Culture: Minister Narend Singh has also been invited to talk about the current policy on arts and culture.

"The arts community and those with an interest in the arts really look forward to finding out more about what the various political parties have to say about their policy on arts and culture – and of course the ever-crucial issue of funding for the arts. We are thrilled that so many of the parties are eager to meet with us and share their views," says PANSA’s Illa Thompson.

All those involved in any aspect of the arts as well as arts supporters are warmly invited to attend. Entrance is free and all are welcome (although donations are invited to cover the cost of the event.)

At the Forum, there will also be the official launch of the KZN Chapter of the national body NACSA – the Network of Arts and Culture SA – an umbrella body under which all organisations, lobby groups, networks and associations serving the visual and performing arts, craft and affiliated genres will be represented.

"Now more than ever all of those involved in the arts need a united voice to represent all of us to address issues of national and critical importance," says Thompson.

At the Forum there will be tables staffed by those organisations serving the arts community. Individual arts practitioners are invited to attend, find out more about all of the various organisations involved in the arts – including the visual arts and performing arts networks, and sign up and get involved.

More information from Illa Thompson on 031 201 1638.
