ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN (article first published : 2004-03-26)

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway will revive dead composer Beethoven again to bring back the hugely popular smash rock n roll musical Roll Over Beethoven between March 30 and May 16.

Roll Over Beethoven was the first show ever staged at the Gateway venue. It has now been seen by more than 350,000 people and returns to Durban due to a huge demand by Barnyard regulars. Having debuted in 1996, it spent nine months at the Waterfront in Cape Town before being performed at the Grahamstown Festival three times and then starting its run on The Barnyard Theatre circuit in 2000 when it was performed for eight months in Alberton.

From there it moved to The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway for three months in 2001/2, before moving to Menlyn Park for four months in 2002/3. The Broadacres theatre enjoyed a five month sell-out run ending in mid 2003, and Roll Over Beethoven finally completed a run at the newest Barnyard Theatre at Cresta in Johannesburg. The shows huge success has also been responsible for the highly popular sequel, Rock Me Amadeus, seen at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway at the end of 2002.

Roll Over Beethoven, inspired by the rock n roll hit by the same name, is a rock revival in which the spirit of Beethoven appears on stage to introduce classically inspired rock numbers from the past century, traditional Irish music and snippets from great classical overtures.

Produced by The Barnyard Theatre Productions, this foot-stomping show will again be brought to life by Cedric Vandenschrik as Beethoven who will be joined by another male and a female vocalist. Live music is very much a part of The Barnyard Theatre experience and a talented six-piece band comprising violin, keyboards, saxophone, guitar, drums and bass guitar will make up the rest of the nine-piece cast.

The musicians make a formidable team and cover everything from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles, Queen and Michael Jackson, with songs including I Will Survive, Walking on Sunshine, We Will Rock You and Dont Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

Tickets R80 pp with Buy One Get One Free promotions on Tuesday night and Sunday matinee shows. Booking and enquiries on 031 566 3045, e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatre.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatre.co.za for more information.
