“G” STRING (article first published : 2003-10-16)

The 2003 festive season at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is in the capable hands of the fairer sex as a mostly female cast presents ”‘G” String. This sultry celebration of the passion of music will enjoy an extended run from October 7 to January 25.

The show’s title is not a reference to risqué underwear and refers instead to the origin of music: Centuries ago a monk in a monastery sang the first note – the “G” note – and this heralded the beginning of music as we know it today. ”G” String takes on a hilarious yet sexy and powerful look at the history of modern music seen from a woman’s perspective.

It is fronted by four female vocalists and a string section who are backed by a five-piece band who take audiences from Carmina Burana and Queen Of The Night to Enya, Shania Twain and Pink.

”G” String is a show of contrasts and a versatile cast covers opera, classical, rock and pop. Devised by Duck Chowles of The Barnyard Theatre Productions, it features a tightly choreographed dance routine that climaxes in a duel between the string trio and singers. The extraordinary string section will shatter preconceptions as they switch from a classical interlude on string instruments to a primal percussion drive on percussive drums.

The Barnyard Theatre’s annual ticket price increase comes into effect with ”G” String and from October 7 patrons can expect to pay R80 pp. The Buy One Get One Free promotions still run on Tuesday night and Sunday matinee shows.
