BRUTAL TUNES EXTENDED (article first published : 2003-09-6)

Running in the Royal Hotel’s Backstage is what has been described as a “polished and well-directed creative partnership involving humorous works by Stephen Sondheim, Tom Lehrer and Noel Coward”.

Featuring the considerable talents of singers Lisa Bobbert and Anthony Stonier and classical pianist Andrew Warburton, Brutal Tunes has received rave reviews from its inception. The abilities of all three performers have been extended to hitherto unseen heights. The result is a highly enjoyable, entertaining and often hilarious programme of numbers which have fairly brutal lyrics but are softened by their unforgettable musical content.

Performing together for the first time in 13 years, Lisa and Anthony frolic through numbers such as Poisoning Pigeons In The Park, What's Going To Happen To The Tots?, Master of the House, I've Been To A Marvellous Party, an Englishman Needs Time and The Masochism Tango.

Andrew shows his sense of fun in the Brutal Concerto and The Gay Eskimo is one of the show’s highlights.

Brutal Tunes has now been extended at the Royal until September 24. In the intermi process, the show has two performances at the Hilton Arts Festival on September 20 and 21 at 12h00. It will then move back to the Royal Hotel for its final performances at the Backstage before going on to perform at the Rhumbelow Theatre on September 26, 27 and 28.

Tickets R120 include the show and dinner in true Royal style. Bookings through the Royal on 031 333 6000.
