REPLAY (article first published : 2003-06-21)

An acoustic musical feast is in store for lovers of exquisite vocals and pure acoustic sounds when Replay, an exciting new concept in live cabaret entertainment, opens for a six week season at the Royal Hotel’s Backstage Theatre on June 25.

The cabaret, starring a multi-talented trio - the sultry Liesl Coppin, vivacious Kate Bruce and Alan Bowen (who apeared in Cabaret Conversations a Backstage last year), will add an essence of clarity and vitality to many of the most loved and recognised old favourites and modern classics. Including music from artists such as Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Norah Jones, Sting and many more.

The sheer virtuosity of Alan’s musical talents on guitar, double bass, percussion and vocals, coupled with the impressive vocal talents of Liesl (last seen in Rock Me Amadeus at the Barnyard) and Kate (who was in Fourplay at Backstage recently), promises an enchanting and highly entertaining evening. Backed by the purest acoustic sounds, Replay brings a refreshingly pure look and sound to both old and new classics.

Under the musical direction of Shelley McLean, another of the Fourplay “foursome”, Replay presents a reworking of popular songs in harmony – using voice and instruments.

“Liesl and I work well together, our voices are similar in range– both mezzo soprano,” says Kate, “but we have a completely different quality enabling us to swap harmonies in one song, thus creating the illusion of one singer with a vast vocal range.”

Replay opens at the Backstage on June 25 and runs until August 2. Tickets R120 include an impressive three-course meal. Bookings through the Royal on 031 333 6000.
