SANTANA RETURNS (article first published : 2003-05-19)

The sell-out musical tribute Santana, which played to packed houses at the Cellar late last year, will appear for a short three week season at the new Dockyard Supper Theatre. (See review in Supper Theatre Archives)

Stuart Mey, producer and musical director of Santana and also The Legend of Eagles, currently showing at this popular supper theatre said; “From the day we opened Eagles at the Dockyard, I have been inundated with requests from the audience to bring Santana back, as the show was booked solid to the end of the run and so many people missed it.”

The current show, The Legend of Eagles, cannot be extended and the next show Lady Sings the Blues featuring Karen van Pletsen and Evan Roberts is booked to open during the second week of June, providing the opportunity to use the three-week gap for Santana.

The memorable sounds of Carlos Santana's music is played as close as possible to the original artist by seven highly talented musicians and covers almost 30 years of the legendary musician's career. If you enjoy Santana's music, the show offers an experience of sound and musicianship of the highest degree.

The line-up of hits are from Santana's classic albums – Super Natural, Abraxas, Freedom, Inner Secrets and include numbers such as Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, Oye Como Va and Samba Pa Ti.

When playing in the Cellar, Santana not only appealed to ardent fans of this distinctive sound of haunting melodies and percussion but succeeded in converting many others who returned to see the show several times.

Santana runs from May 21 to June 7. Booking is essential at the Dockyard Supper Theatre on 031 332 1086 or at Computicket.

Tickets vary according to the seating and range in price from R65 to the luxurious sofas at R100, with a superb 3-course meal at R70. A discounted price is available on Sundays and Tuesdays, when the price of R100 includes the show and a two-course meal. Saturday matinees start at 14h00 when unreserved seating will be available at R70 (show only). The Dockyard’s lunchtime snack menu will be available from 12h30 before the matinee performance starts. There is secure parking near the theatre, which is also accessible for wheelchairs.
