BEAUTIFUL NOISE (article first published : 2003-05-3)

Singers Darren King, Vanessa Skaer, Wallace Nock and pianist Rodney Chapman join forces to present Beautiful Noise, a musical tribute to Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow in the Royal Hotel’s Backstage Theatre.

The show promises to be a mix of a live band gig and classy review bar and will feature two of America’s finest singing and song writing talents. Said Darren King, “We don’t presume to emulate Diamond or Manilow. We are paying tribute to these great artists.”

To quote Neil Diamond’s own words: “In the beginning was the word, said the playwright, but as the songwriter knows, in the beginning comes the melody ... then comes the words”.

There are few singer-songwriters whose talents have sustained careers, almost in parallel, and whose music has touched generations of people for close on four decades. Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow are regarded by many people as having produced some of the greatest American music over the last 40 years. With hits like Mandy and Love on the Rocks having been sung in concerts to millions of people around the world.

Musical Directors Wallace Nock and Rodney Chapman have chosen to weave together the best of both artists creating a show comprising some of their most loved music – including Sweet Caroline, You don’t Bring me Flowers, Copa Cobana, Cracklin’ Rosie, Could it be Magic and many more. Nock said, “The list was so long, the biggest problem we had was deciding what to leave out!” Vocalists King and Skaer are supported to great effect by Nock and Chapman on piano, keyboard, guitar and sax, together with some backing tracks.

The elegant Backstage Supper Theatre provides the perfect venue for this classy mix of live band and is also the setting for the multitalented Vanessa Skaer’s last show in South Africa before she returns to her roots in the United Kingdom.

Beautiful Noise runs in the Backstage Theatre from May 9 to June 14. Tickets R120 include a top class three-course meal. Bookings through the Royal Hotel on 031 333 6000.
