LIVE THE 60s REVOLUTION (article first published : 2003-03-23)

The show will feature music by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and The Kinks with numbers such as All You Need Is Love, Mellow Yellow, Proud Mary, Matthew and Son and Satisfaction.

Fashion and etiquette in the early 60s saw bands neatly dressed in matching black or grey suits and with perfectly coifffed fringes. In this vain, Yesterday starts with the Mersey sound which was epitomized by The Beatles and marked the beginning of a musical revolution as British bands made their mark on radio stations all around the world.

These conservative times were marked with songs like Twist and Shout and I Wanna Hold Your Hand and but a youth culture emerged with values that seemed to contradict everything that the previous generation stood for. Mass communication helped create and sustain a worldwide youth market, hem lines shrunk visibly and the music of bands such as the Rolling Stones and The Doors came to symbolize young people’s rejection of parental values.

The show includes a three piece string section and a three piece brass section to add an exciting dynamic to the music orchestrated by groups like Blood, Sweat and Tears and the musical Hair!

Appearing in Yesterday are singers Ramaine Barreiro and De Wet Wraight with Kieran Rennie, Andy Murray and Mark Freel (guitar and vocals), Alan Lloyd (drums) and Dawn Selby (keyboards and vocals).

Tickets R70 (Buy One Get One Free on Tuesday night and Sunday matinees). Booking and inquiries on 031 566 3045/6, e-mail barngate@mweb.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatre.co.za
