NATURAL WOMEN IN THE CELLAR (article first published : 2003-02-22)

Natural Women, the next show to open at the Playhouse Cellar, is an elegant musical showcase featuring three female vocalists, each performing in their unique style, as well as working together in close harmony.

Musical director and vocalist Jane Candow, said that Natural Women is a diverse arrangement of music which would include rock, pop and soul from the 60’s through to the 90’s, interlinked with amusing poetry and light repartee about the performers. There is something for all tastes – pop classics such as Aquarius, Baby Love, Elaine Page’s I know Him so Well, some jazz, a haunting version of Wuthering Heights as well as numbers from Celine Dion and Yazoo – as well as Arethra Franklin’s Natural Women.

With choreography by Fiona Barnes, Natural Women will feature Jane Candow who has performed in supper theatre and with various rock bands around the country and Roz Tarr who started her singing career singing jazz and pop and also sang with Stuart Mey’s band, Larry & the Lounge Lizards. The show will introduce opera singer Mariette Heenop in her first professional production.

“As the name suggests, there are no false images with Natural Women,” says Jane Candow. “Nothing clever, no hidden messages, it is pure entertainment. People have so much to deal with in their every day lives, this is an opportunity for them to empty their brains, sit back and be entertained.”

Natural Women runs for a very short season in the Playhouse Cellar from March 12 to 29. Tickets R120 include a three-course meal. Booking through Playhouse Dial a Seat or Computicket on 031 369 9555 or 083 915 8000.
