CLAPTON BENEFIT PERFORMANCE (article first published : 2003-02-19)

Stuart Mey’s musical tribute to the well known musician, Eric Clapton, currently playing in the Cellar, has taken Durban by storm. Tickets for Clapton have been hard to come by, the show having played to full houses at every performance since it opened at the beginning of February.

All is not lost for Clapton fans; however, as the final performance on March 8 moves upstairs into the 1200 seat Opera Theatre. This will be a benefit performance and the price of the tickets for this performance includes the cost of a raffle for the prize of an Eric Clapton Signature model of a Fender Stratocaster Guitar.

The proceeds of the competition will be given to the Highway Hospice.

In addition to the songs featured in the Cellar show, such as Cocaine, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, Tears in Heaven and Bad Love, several additional hit numbers will be played and guest artists invited to perform include Gerald Knott, who will be playing the prize winning guitar.

This final performance will also introduce Garret Van der Spek a young up and coming vocalist currently singing in the band Cynosure - in keeping with Stuart Mey’s policy of providing new talent with an opportunity to be seen and heard.

To be eligible to win this magnificent guitar, with a retail value of R25,000, the winner MUST BE at the final performance in the Opera Theatre on March 8, which means that there are only 1200 tickets (the total number of seats in the theatre) available to win the prize.

Clapton is slick and true to the original Clapton sound (see review on these pages) and features a nine piece band – producer and vocalist, Stuart Mey; his daughter Nicky; drummer Ian Webster and Tory Cassells on keyboard. Also in the line up are Bruce Boome, Dave Arnold, Glen and Andy Turrell and Rowan Stuart. “We feature the best and most well known numbers of Clapton’s music from the last 40 years,” says Stuart Mey. “Everyone will recognise the songs, because they all bring back memories for someone.”

The season cannot be extended, so book tickets as soon as possible. Tickets for the final show on March 8 are R100, which includes the cost of the raffle. Book at Computicket or Playhouse Dial a Seat on 031 369 9555 or 083 915 8000.
