THEATRE DIARY (article first published : 2003-02-18)

After months of research and discussions, the Durban TheatreDIARY has been launched in order to attract a larger audience from both inside and outside Durban to productions presented in the City.

The two-monthly publication will be widely distributed through all local accommodation establishments, tourism offices, embassies, libraries, Durban International Airport, museums and art galleries. Copies will also be sent to main tourism outlets in the other major cities of South Africa.

This full colour diary will have an initial print run of 10,000 copies and will incorporate a map identifying the locations of the various performance venues as well as restaurants, galleries etc.

All theatre practitioners are invited to advertise performances scheduled during April/May 2003. Main advertising space is reserved for the performing arts and will be complemented by restaurants, pubs and the like. The advertising rates for the performing arts is being largely subsidised by other advertisements in order to keep costs as low as possible.

In a map fold-out format, the Durban TheatreDIARY is printed on 115gsm gloss art folded to DL size. The standard will at all times be kept high as per the requirements of main hotel groups in order to allow bed-side distribution.

It is to be noted that the Durban TheatreDIARY is not replacing the monthly D'ARTS Magazine but rather serves as an introduction to it as well as to the arts website artSMart (www.artsmart.co.za). This publication is complimentary and distribution will be mostly to the untapped market such as tourists and visitors to Durban.

This handy and valuable guide to theatre, restaurants and pubs in Durban is the brainchild of local actor and director Thomie Holtzhausen who has close links to the accommodation industry. He can be contacted on 082 805 2888 or phone/fax 031 303 8298.
