ROCK ME AMADEUS (article first published : 2002-10-7)

Following the huge success of Roll Over Beethoven, The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway offers its sequel, Rock Me Amadeus from October 1 to January 26.

Duck Chowles, who brought Roll Over Beethoven, Glory Days and Mick & Tina to patrons of The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway, has again devised and produced this show. Following in the footsteps of Ludwig von Beethoven, this time it is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who comes to life as a sexy and romantic dead composer who has finally been given the chance to rock and roll.

From the moment the band opens with the Mozart classic Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, you know that this is going to be a rock revival with a difference. The show sees a totally new repertoire of rocked up classics intertwined with popular rock and pop tunes.

The nine-piece cast melds the three lead singers with violin, keyboard, saxophone, guitar, bass and drums. The result is an incredible fidelity to the originals, as well as a consistently high standard of musicality - both instrumental and vocal. From the moment the lights go down, Rock Me Amadeus promises to delight its audience with a great variety of music from the last century.

“This is the show that everybody has been waiting for,” says Barnyard management, “and once again audience participation is the rule and everybody is encouraged to join in as Amadeus counts down the hits. If you enjoyed Roll Over Beethoven, you will love the sequel!”

Tickets R70 Wednesday to Saturday, with the popular "Buy One Get One Free" promotion applicable on the Tuesday night and Sunday lunchtime shows. The Festive Season run will include a Christmas Eve show at the regular "Buy One Get One Free" promotional price for a Tuesday night, as well as a phenomenal New Year's Eve show for R170 which will include the show, an added set from the cast and music from Durban's top DJ, David Yapp, into 2003. These shows were a huge hit last year, so be sure to book early.
