LIZA WITH A T (article first published : 2002-09-6)

Diminutive vocal powerhouse Tonya Koenderman is back in Durban in September with her one-woman hit show LIZA with a T directed by Neil Lessick which is a tribute to international singing star Liza Minelli. It has been performed to sell-out houses and critical acclaim in Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, Durban, Cape Town, Namibia, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.

The show tells the story of Liza's life - her close relationship with her father, her struggle to conquer drug and alcohol abuse and her many relationships as well as the influence of her mother, Judy Garland. In the main the show plays tribute to the songs Liza made famous such as Cabaret, Mein Herr, Maybe this Time, Money Money, Ring them Bells and many more. (See review on these pages)

Hours of careful study of Liza Minelli's moves and music resulted in a presentation that has brought great success for Tonya. Her impersonation has been so impressive that she was invited to star in the look-alike, sound-alike show Stars in your Eyes in 1996. This was such a success that she became the only artist to perform her stint in the international show Beyond Belief which ran for 18 months at the Sun City Extravaganza.

Other cabarets to Tonya's credit are The Doowah Girls directed by Kevin Feather, as well as WE 3 with Gordon Mulholland and Paul Andrews. Her other one-woman shows include Age of Aquarius and Divas to a T.

Liza with a T can be seen at The Backstage Theatre, Royal Hotel Durban from September 4 to 28. Bookings can be made by calling 031 333-6000.
