SANTANA (article first published : 2002-08-22)

The rhythms of legendary band Santana will resound from the Playhouse Cellar from August 27, when a seven piece band pay tribute to this well known musician.

The show features the music of Carlos Santana, covering 30 years of this great musicianís classic sound. From the 70ís when he and his band moved into the spotlight at the Woodstock Festival, spreading their message of love, freedom and equality with their Afro-Cuban rhythms mixed with electric guitar, to his latest Grammy award winning album Super Natural, the show is an experience of sound not to be missed.

Produced and directed by Stuart Mey, who was responsible for the recent successful Bus Stop in the same venue, Santana promises to be an upbeat vibey show and will feature Mey, Dave Arnold, Bruce Boom and Ian Webster, all of whom performed recently at the Cellar in Bus Stop.

Stuart Mey is an ardent supporter of young talent so joining this veteran line-up are three very talented younger musicians: 18 year old Rowan Stuart (who played the lead in Themi Venturasís The Guitar that Rocked the World), fellow cast member from the same show, Andy Turrell (21), and introducing newcomer to the musical entertainment scene and the only female in the cast, 19-year old Tory Cassells on keyboard and vocals. Numbers include hits from classic Santana albums (Abraxas, Freedom and Inner Secrets) such as Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, Oye Como va and Samba Pa Ti.

Tickets R50 for the show and R55 for optional three-course meal. Performances at 20h30 Tuesdays to Saturdays and booking is at Computicket or the Playhouse. For group bookings of 20 or more, contact Sharon on 083 486-3271.
