AMADEUS FOR BARNYARD (article first published : 2002-08-20)

Following the huge success of Roll Over Beethoven, The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway offers the sequel, Rock Me Amadeus, from October 1 to January 26.

Duck Chowles, who brought Roll Over Beethoven, Glory Days and Mick & Tina to The Barnyard, has again devised and produced this show. This time it is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart instead of Ludwig von Beethoven who comes to life as a sexy and romantic dead composer who has finally been given the chance to rock and roll.

The show sees a totally new repertoire of rocked-up classics intertwined with popular rock and pop tunes. The nine-piece cast melds the three lead singers with violin, keyboard, saxophone, guitar, bass and drums. The show has been a huge hit in Johannesburg and has been sold out for over six months. Rock Me Amadeus was nominated for a Vita award and has been directed and scripted by the award-wining director Charmaine Weir Smith.

Tickets R70 Wednesday to Saturday with the popular “Buy One Get One Free” promotion on Tuesday night and Sunday lunchtime shows.

The Festive Season run will include a Christmas Eve show at the regular “Buy One Get One Free” promotional price for a Tuesday night, as well as a New Year’s Eve show for R170. This includes the show, an added set from the cast and music from Durban’s top DJ, David Yapp, into 2003.

For bookings and enquiries, phone the Barnyard Theatre on 031 566-3045/6, e-mail barngate@mweb.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatre.co.za
