STRAPLESS (article first published : 2002-06-28)

A host of the best known and much loved musical ballads from the 1940's up to the present day will feature in Strapless - a luxuriously lyrical evening of adult entertainment specially conceived and produced by Mark Hawkins of Very Very Big Productions for the discerning audience looking for a world class feast of music and mirth.

The show boasts the outstanding dance and choreography skills of David Gouldie of the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, as well as the exceptional dramatic and musical skills of Catherine Mace and Belinda Henwood. Strapless also features the musical and performance talents of Evan Roberts on grand piano and Bongani Sokhela on double bass with dancers Ingrid Weerheim and Candice Crowther. The script is by Nick Warren and the girls' undergarments are sponsored by Gossard and Wonderbra.

Set in a mythical music hall venue in a timeless place, Strapless tells the story of a small band of immensely talented singers, dancers and musicians whom fate has thrown back together after their tempestuous heydays in pre-war Germany.

Rudolf Snoze is the pianist and MC who steers us through the mysteriously stormy careers and relationships of Lili and Marlene, two of Germany's most competitive cabaret singers. These two divine divas have long been in battle to win the hearts and wallets of their adoring male public, and of their mutual and almost mythically marvellous heart-throb, Hymie in particular. Through the course of the evening's entertainment audiences board an emotional musical rollercoaster that bound this spectacular trio together until the fateful day when their singular love turned into their peculiar loss.

Strapless features a carefully chosen line-up of songs- many of which have been adapted and reworked for the production such as The Boys in the Bedroom, Easiest Girl in Town; One More for the Toad; Mad About the Boy; I Know Hymie So Well; Masochism Tangas and Wilkommen.

The show runs in the Lango's Theatre from June 28 to August 4 and the ticket price includes the show and a meal. Performances Tuesday and Sunday R100 (two course meal) and from Wednesday to Saturday R130 (three course meal). Cocktail previews take place on June 28 and 29. Book at Lango's Theatre on 031 563-7324.
