MAXWELL MAGIC BACK (article first published : 1999-09-24)

Bouncing back into Durban after a successful season in Atlanta, America, comes entertainer and raconteur Peter Maxwell. He must be connected to Durban with an elastic umbilical cord because he’s been coming back to the city for over 40 years – either that, or we’re utterly irresistible!

Peter Maxwell has built up a legendary reputation, resulting from the many years he performed (usually over the festive holiday season) at the Edward Hotel. This season, however, you'll need to head out of Durban to catch him as he is now comfortably settled in a new venue, the popular The Swan & Rail in Hillcrest, just off the Main Road (Inanda Road) which Peter claims is to be his NEW "Millennium home".

For those unfamiliar with the Maxwell Magic, he is a highly skilled performer with a command of the piano that is awesome, acute observation powers and the ability to portray a sensitive side while delivering the strongest satirical barb! He’s now reached the stage of his association with Durban audiences where he believes he has entertained at least two generations – possibly verging on three!

So, if you’ve never heard of Peter Maxwell, pop along and see what fascinated your grandparents! It’ll be remarks like “Olé” (roughly translated as “Olay” - 1958 vintage) to the proverbial rousing “Cheers!” of today with “Elbows up and Pinkies out!” as well as the chorus of the vestal virgins carrying their lamps - “doobee doobee doobee bye-bye” - accompanied by a scrunched-up face and wicked twinkle.

His show, which doesn’t actually have a name – “What else but Fun, Frolic and a Frantic Good Time,” quips Peter, recently opened at this popular venue and runs from Wednesday evenings (dinner from 18h30 for 19h00 with showtime at 20h30) to Sunday lunch time at 12h00 with showtime at 14h30. The venue is closed on Mondays. There is no cover charge and the meal is either buffet at R65 or a la carte. Bookings by fax on (031) 765-5468 or phone on (031) 765-5467.
