MICHAEL GREEN’S WINE NOTES (article first published : 2002-02-22)

The 28th Nederburg wine auction will be held at Paarl on April 12 and 13, and this year there are 17 new participants among the 84 producers and brands represented. A total of 157 wines will be placed on auction.

As usual, red wines lead the field with 104 entries, followed by 38 white, 11 fortified wines (six ports and five muscadel and jerepigo wines) and four sparkling wines.

The reds include a Petit Verdot, a new wine from Nederburg on auction for the first time, 30 cabernet sauvignons, 24 red blends, 15 shiraz/syrah wines, 14 pinotages, seven merlots, three cabernet francs and one pinot noir.

Petit Verdot is a superior red grape from Bordeaux in France. It is grown at the Cape in very small quantities and has been used in a few blended wines. As far as I know this new Nederburg label is the first single cultivar Petit Verdot produced in South Africa.

The white wines on the auction include 15 chardonnays, four chenin blanc, three sauvignon blanc, three Semillon and one pinot blanc. The auction manager, Bennie Howard, points out that it is only 15 years since the first chardonnay was placed on the auction, in 1987, remarkable when one considers the great popularity of chardonnay today.

There are two special late harvest and 10 noble late harvest wines on the auction, including the famous Nederburg Edelkeur.

The auction newcomers include Dieu Donne, a Franschhoek cellar owned by Robert Maingard of KwaZulu/Natal; Fleur du Cap; Jacobsdal; Knorhoek; Le Riche; Slaley; Longridge; Fort Simon; Havana Hills; Mount Rozier; Philip Jordaan; Old Vines, and Rijk’s Private Cellar. The well-known and highly regarded Pongracz is a newcomer in the sparkling wine field. – Michael Green
