JONNY COOPER ORCHESTRA (article first published : 2002-02-7)

The Jonny Cooper Big Band makes its first appearance in Durban at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway from February 12 to March 3.

South Africa’s premier big band will be perform their popular show Legends of Swing which highlights the 1940s musical scene. The show pays tribute to musical greats such as Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Tommy Dorsey, and will include songs such as Mack the Knife, New York New York, Unforgettable, My Funny Valentine and other ‘40s favourites.

The Cape Town based big band, now in its tenth year, replicates the Glenn Miller civilian orchestra of 1938 with four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and a four-piece rhythm section consisting of drums, bass, guitar and piano. They signed a representation agreement at the end of October 2001 with Prestige-Elite London who will press and distribute their Legends of Swing CD, which is due for release in the UK early this year.

Much-loved entertainer Judy Page returns to Durban after a 10 year absence when she stars as guest female vocalist from February 12 to 24. Local showgirl Melanie Roberts will take over the female vocals for the final week from February 26 and March 3.

Donald Tshomela, who has more than 30 years experience as a jazz vocalist and performs on Jonny Cooper’s Legends of Swing CD, will feature as the male vocalist for the Durban run.

Tickets R65 for shows from Wednesday to Saturday. The very popular “Buy One Get One Free” promotion will continue on Tuesday night and Sunday lunchtime shows. For bookings and inquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 566-3045/6 or e-mail barngate@mweb.co.za
