ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN (article first published : 2001-10-23)

The brand new Barnyard Theatre at Gateway opens on November 2 with the rock 'n roll hit musical Roll Over Beethoven. The show has enjoyed a sold-out run country-wide, successfully performing in Cape Town for 12 months before taking the Sangita Barnyard Theatre in Alberton by storm for eight months last year.

Roll Over Beethoven, inspired by the rock 'n roll classic by the same name, is a rock revival in which the spirit of Beethoven appears on stage to introduce classically-inspired rock numbers from the past century as well as traditional Irish music and snippets from great classical overtures.

Scripted and directed by Ian von Memerty, the show is produced by rock 'n roll dynamo Duck Chowles. The cast includes Cedric van den Skrik (Beethoven), Shelley McLean and Granville Michaels on vocals with Kate O'Hanlon on violin and keyboard, Judy Brown on keyboard and saxophone, Roger Grant on lead guitar, Alan Lloyd on drums and Kerry Hiles on bass.

The musicians cover everything from Tchaikovsky and the Beatles to Michael Jackson and Tina Turner. Songs include I Will Survive, Another One Bites the Dust, Careless Whisper and Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me.

Patrons are encouraged to arrive well before curtain-up and bring their own picnic basket meal which they can enjoy around heavy wooden tables before the show begins. Preferably with a 24-hours notice, Fabulous Food Boxes can be booked at R35pp through the theatre. A cash bar and cigar lounge are available.

Roll Over Beethoven runs from Tuesdays to Saturdays with tickets at R65. Guests are advised to get to the theatre at 18h30 (show at 20h00). Sunday is Family Day with a "Buy One, Get One Free" offer on the lunchtime show, with the doors opening at 12h00 (show at 14h00).

Bookings and inquiries on The Barnyard Theatre hotline on 0860 102 370.
