MILLENNIUM MELTDOWN (article first published : 1999-08-23)

The Langoustine-Theatre-by-the-Sea is having a Millennium Meltdown in September when Duncan Royce, Kate Bruce and friends start counting down the musical hits to welcome in the year 2000. The show, devised and written by Duncan and Kate, features the singing and acting talents of Kate together with Liesl Coppin, Tim Wells, Percy Smith and special guest appearance by The Computer.

The production is a show within a show, with a storyline that deals with four actors employed to perform in the Millennium Meltdown Show by self-appointed controller of the human race, William Fence of MacroHard Productions. The technological side of the show such as sound, lighting, costume, playlist and format is controlled by a powerful computer called Intel E Gent which views humans with great disdain.

However the infamous Y2K virus is hovering in the wings and becomes a major threat to the smooth running of the show and, before long, a battle of wills ensues between the computer and the actors. In the end, the spirit of reconciliation conquers all and soon the actors and technology work together in perfect unison to create a musical and lighting spectacle. The over-riding feel is one of a mega-party welcoming and embracing the new millennium together.

The production features the favourite and best music hits from the 80ís and 90ís. Contemporary artists include The Cardigans, Janet Jackson, REM, Cher, Paula Cole, M-People, Bryan Adams, Robbie Williams and the Spice Girls. Those artists from the 80ís featured include Duran-Duran, Wham!, Culture Club, Meatloaf and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Millennium Meltdown opens on September 1 and ticket prices includes a three-course meal. Book through the Langoustine on (031) 563 7324 (ask for Lisa Todd), or via Computicket. Save half of your booking costs and book directly on the internet at http://www.computicket.com.
