DINERS CLUB WINELIST AWARDS (article first published : 2001-08-9)

The Hilton Hotel’s Rainbow Terrace has walked away with a coveted Diamond Award at this year’s annual Diners Club Winelist of the Year Awards. This is the first time that a KZN establishment has achieved such a high honour at the Awards.

The Diamond Award is presented to establishments that achieve over 85% in the judging of their winelists. The criteria include whether or not the establishment has a qualified and trained wine advisor or sommelier who is able to assist diners with their wine choice; whether or not the cellar is air-conditioned or mechanically cooled, and the variety of international wines that are stocked.

Cellar Award winners are Café 1999, Berea, Durban, and Eat Greek on Broadway, Durban North.

Merit Award-winning KZN establishments are AKA Restaurant in Durban, the Durban Country Club, Granny Mouse Country House (Balgowan); Hartford House (Mooi River); La Tala Restauarnt (Eston) and Lythwood Lodge (Lidgetton West).

Granny Mouse Country House also received a Six-Year Consecutive Winner Award, having been presented with a Winelist Award since 1996.

Diners Club introduced the Winelist of the Year Awards 13 years ago to encourage establishments to improve the standard of winelists on offer on a consistent basis.

Eastern Cape winners were awarded the following day: These included Platinum Award Winner Sabatino’s Italian Restaurant in Port Elizabeth and Merit Award winners, De Kelder Seafood & Grill (Port Elizabeth); River Bend (Addo) and The Breakers (Jeffrey’s Bay).
