SWOON (article first published : 2001-07-19)

Engaging entertainer de Wet Wraight is back in a fresh new production in the Playhouse Cellar titled Swoon. Billed as a sexy musical send-up, de Wet struts his stuff to the likes of Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, Julio Iglesias, Britney Spears, Macy Grey and old favourites such as Tina Turner, Cher and Elvis Presley. Watch out for special guest appearances by the Village People, Louis Armstrong and Sarah Brightman.

Well-known for her musical arrangement and direction for hit shows such as Cliff, One Voice, Elvis – Rock ‘n Roll Spectacular and You’re So Vain, maestro extraordinaire Dawn Selby will be on piano and backing vocals. Some of the songs featured include Look at Me, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Baby One More Time, I Just Can’t Help Believing, I Try and She Bangs.

Handling set and costume design is Gareth Kenna, whose creations were featured in the Cellar hits Sinderella!, Aladdin, Snow White and Several Dwarfs (for which he received a Vita nomination), Show Off and the recent production of Cliff.

With nearly 40 production credits to his name, hard-working and sought-after entertainer Peter Court will direct the production. Apart from his previous successful productions in the Cellar (Elton, One More Night, Phil Collins and Cliff), he has garnered much acclaim with puppet productions under the Creative Madness banner.

Swoon opens on August 1 at the Playhouse Cellar. Tickets R100 from Wednesdays to Saturdays include a three-course meal. Bonus performances are on Tuesdays and Sundays at R75 (two-course meal). Cocktail shows on Fridays at 17h15 are R30 (no meal). Book through TicketWeb on 8061-400-500 or Dial-a-Seat on (031) 360-0444.
