DASH THAT DAGGER (article first published : 2001-07-19)

For their next production, the Highway Intimate Theatre presents Dash That Dagger Or Out, Damn Spot, written by Chris Piccione especially for this active theatre society. The play is a comedy spoof of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It deals with members of an amateur dramatic society who have entered their version of Macbeth into a play festival. They have tackled the play with earnestness and are determined to put on a winning performance.

The play highlights some of the more amateurish attempts at a serious production. A cast member fails to arrive and has to be replaced at the last minute by the backstage stalwart. An injured cast member bravely struggles along in spite of adversity. And temper tantrums and in-fighting don’t help matters! Finally an esteemed adjudicator delivers his considered opinion of the production.

The cast includes Anne Petersen, Jeremy Richardson, Graesen Wood, Pauline Staff, Clare Hoogervorst, Carol Ramsden, Neville Tucker, Kay Jodrell and new member Adile Mngadi who is a first-year drama student at Technikon Natal.

Dash That Dagger Or Out, Damn Spot runs nightly from July 26 to 29 and again from August 2 to 5. Tickets R45 include supper (except for the gala evening on August 3 when tickets are R55 for a three-course meal). Performances Thursdays to Saturdays at 19h15 with Sunday shows at 18h15. A full cash bar is available.

The venue is the Pinetown Library Functions Room on the corner of Crompton Street and Old Main Road in Pinetown. A security guard will be on duty.

Booking is essential for catering purposes and also because the venue can only hold a certain number of people. Contact Celia on (031) 702-1289 or Clare on (031) 767-0244 who can also provide contact numbers for the performances on July 28 and August 2 which are charity nights.
