FEED THE BABIES (article first published : 2001-05-14)

Well-known entertainer Miriam ďMimĒ Erasmus puts on an annual variety show in aid of the Feed the Babies Fund. This year, the event takes place on May 19 at 19h00 in St Thomasís Hall (entrance off Essenwood Road).

Hosted by well-known theatre personalities Caroline Smart and Peter Gardner, the line-up features Miriam and John Erasmus as well as other popular names on the local entertainment scene. These include magicians Trevor & Duille and David OíConnor, Cherry the Clown (Adi Paxton) and Cecil Northcote. Also appearing will be the Durban Menís Choir.

Direct from the tour of The Guitar That Rocked the World will be Andrew and Glen Turrell and a major highlight will be an item from popular broadcaster Monica Fairall, guitarist/singer Patrick Collyer and singer/actress Angela Dodds of the smash-hit musical Those Were the Days.

Special guests will be Our Future Group Dancers, a group of children from KwaNyuswa under the leadership of their drummer and choreographer Nelly Manqele. From very poor backgrounds, they perform with a fervour and style that prompted Miriam Erasmus to invite them to perform at the concert. Well-known former ice show producer Marjorie Chase offered to sponsor their costumes which have been designed by Jerry Nicholls.

Also appearing will be the Line Dancers and Mimís student singers. To complete the programme, thereíll also be a surprise unscheduled performance by some Durbanís most well-known personalities. Tickets R30 booked through Feed the Babies Fund on (031) 201-4682/5.
