A DAME, A DOG AND A DEAD GUY (article first published : 2001-04-21)

A Dame, A Dog and a Dead Guy which opens at the Langoustine Theatre by the Sea on April 25 is will be right up the street of those who love vintage comic book-type heroes, "whodunnit" murder mystery stories and good blues, ballads and rock ’n roll.

Catherine Mace, whose Cabaret Sauvignon was one of the most worthwhile supper productions seen on the Durban supper theatre circuit over the last couple of years, has written a musical cabaret inspired by the likes of Mike Hammer and Dick Tracey. In this production, the hero has to find the wicked cold blooded killer who murdered a billionaire playboy who turned up dead in bed next to a Chihuahua!

Tim Wells will appear Kurt Stark, the smooth-talking, cool-as-ice, slightly shabby, down-on-his-luck private eye, Kurt Stark. Direct from Alone on a Saturday Night, Belinda Henwood plays the doe-eyed, velvet-voiced vamp while Catherine takes the part of the desperate damsel in distress.

Presented by Gary McKenzie and directed by Michael Broderick, who also designed the lighting, A Dame, A Dog and a Dead Guy is a slick, funny and stylised three-hander. The set design features cartoons by Greg King and musical direction is by Tim Pullen. The playlist includes Sting’s Moon over Bourbon Street as well as Luck Be a Lady, Money’s Too Tight to Mention, Stray Cat Strut, Puttin’ on the Ritz, You Can Leave Your Hat On, some Tom Waits standards… and others.

Tickets R110 (includes a three course meal) for performances Wednesday to Saturday; and R79 (two course) on Tuesdays and Sundays. More details or bookings through the Langoustine on (031) 563-7324 or at Computicket - credit cards on (031) 304-2753 - or online at http//www.computicket.com
