SAMBA (article first published : 2001-03-21)

Lovers of the red hot Latino vibe will enjoy Themi Venturas’s new musical super theatre show Samba which is running at the Langoustine Theatre by the Sea until April 29. There are low-priced preview performances on March 21, 22, 23 and 25 with tickets at R90 (include three-course meal).

Enjoy the music of Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin and the Vengaboys. With numbers like La Vida Loca, On Dous Tres, Marguerita, Mambo Italiano, I wanna Be Loved by You, Samba in your Cafa, Waiting for Tonight, Shake your bon bon and more. The cast will feature many new faces on the Durban supper theatre circuit such as Tarryn Leek (of Cape Town’s Opera School), Keith Webster, Marc Maurel, Collette Akeroyd, Anneline Potgieter and dancing and aerobics champ Patrick Bauristhene.

Heading the cast is a glorious larger-than-life puppet who has been whispered to out-class Joan Brickhill, Judy Page and Miss Piggy! Miss Carmen Leander has been designed and made by Peter Court. Colin Peddie makes a fast side-step from guitarist to puppeteer as he "handles" this grande dame of all things hysterically hispanic.

The production, which has played to enthusiastic rave reviews in Port Elizabeth, combines Disney-style family humour with sexy sambas and liquid velvet voices in a youthful, original, modern production. Direction is by Themi Venturas with choreography by Denya Maslen, original set design by Peter Court and original costumes by Coral Chamberlain and Jannie Engelbrecht.

The show officially opens on Tuesday March 27 and runs until end of April. Tickets for the main run are R110 (includes three-course meal) Wednesday to Saturday and R89 (two-course meal) Tuesdays and Sundays.
