CABARET ON THE COUCH (article first published : 2001-02-18)

Mari Visagie takes a look at the state of the cabaret genre in Durban in her highly amusing production Cabaret on the Couch (see review in Supper Theatre Archives).

Set in a psychiatrist’s office and using an array of outrageous props, costumes and wigs, Mari is on the couch. Does “true cabaret” still exist, she asks? Is there place for such an art form in present-day society or has cabaret been replaced by another art form? Sounds esoteric but don’t be misled, this is a well-constructed show focusing on Mari’s versatility as a singer and an actress and, with Matthew Vlok at the piano, offers an interesting piece of supper theatre.

Direction is by Eddie Magic and sound by Phillipe Audoire.

Cabaret on the Couch will take place every Tuesday – March 6, 13, 20 and 27 – at 19h30 at Bella Vista, 250 Old Main Road in Botha’s Hill. Tickets R65. Booking essential as space is limited. Contact Jane on (031) 765-1516.
