MICHAEL GREEN’S WINE NOTES #198 (article first published : 2008-06-17)

Many and varied are the ways in which liquor producers try to obtain publicity for their products. As the good book says, they have sought out many inventions. Here are some of them.

Oak Valley Wines at Elgin, on the N2 (the coast road from Cape Town to Durban) have launched a “Mountain Biking Experience”, a 21-kilometre biking route on this 1,786-hectare farm. The farm’s winemaker, Pieter Visser, is a keen mountain biker. The route goes through an oak forest, vineyards, apple and pear orchards and cattle pastures, and it is suggested that the cyclists might like to taste Oak Valley wines afterwards at the farm’s tasting centre. More information from Pieter Visser on 021 859 4110.

In the same winegrowing area, Elgin Vintners have apparently discovered that spicy Chorizo sausages are the perfect accompaniment for their newly released Elgin Vintners 2000 Shiraz (which retails at about R85 a bottle). Liz Wood, owner of the Rockhaven guest house in the area, makes a good version of these sausages and they will be available, with the wine, at Elgin Valley Markets on November 1 and 8 November as well as on December 6 (and, presumably, from Liz Wood at any time).More information from Nicky Wallace on 021 848 9587.

The Franschhoek wine valley is celebrating its Huguenot heritage with a Bastille Festival during the weekend of July 12 and 13 (Bastille Day is of course a public holiday in France, marking the storming of this Paris prison on July 14 1789 and the start of the French Revolution). At Franschhoek there will be a food and wine marquee, floats, a chef and waiters’ race, French films, market stalls, a freedom run and a long walk which pays tribute to Nelson Mandela who in 1990 was released from prison in this area. More information from Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourist Association on 021 876 3603.

Chivas Brothers whisky, which is marketed by Pernod Ricard in South Africa, is sponsoring a 100 Pipers Scottish pipe band championship in Dumbarton, Scotland. Making use of an overworked word, the company says it is helping to perpetuate the iconic bagpipe tradition. When it comes to the word icon, I am an iconoclast.

At the Vergelegen wine estate at Somerset West various events will be held between June 25 and August 13. They include barrel tastings of wine with the winemaker, Andre van Rensburg, environmental walks followed by breakfast, a cooking demonstration and a winter dinner with Vergelegen wines. They are not free; for example, the tasting will cost R95 per person and the dinner R270. More information on 021 847 1346.

If you are planning a visit to the Cape in winter (or Scotland in the northern summer) these promotions by the liquor industry all sound interesting and enjoyable. - Michael Green
