THE SOUND OF MOVIES (article first published : 2008-06-2)

They're back! The group that presented Rock, Rattle 'n Roll, Yesterday Once More, Oh What A Night!' and other popular shows at the Hexagon Dive in Pietermaritzburgare back with their latest show. Their shows have had many sold-out seasons over the last five years and have become an annual highlight on the Hex Calendar.

The Sound of Movies is a tribute to the songs made famous by the great (and not so great) movies of the 20th Century. The group have chosen a selection of famous songs that were a highlight of the particular movie they were written for. Chronologically, the songs range from the 1930's to the 1990's, and include such hits as Take my Breath Away, A Hard Day's Night, Alfie, Say a Little Prayer, Up Where We Belong, As Time Goes By, Mona Lisa, amongst many more. For the trivia lovers out there, there will also be a small quiz about the songs and the movies they come from.

The cast is once again made up of Sandra Styles, Tammy Calder, James Aitchison and Ryan Calder, with the music provided by Justin Southey, whose arrangements of the songs are fresh and dynamic, with some being hauntingly beautiful. Peter Mitchell is once again the director, and promises that this new show will live up to, and even surpass the professionalism, fun and nostalgia of its predecessors.

The Sound of Movies runs as picnic evenings in the Hexagon Dive from June 12 to 14 and again from June 19 to 21 at 19h00 for 19h30. Tickets R60pp (R55pp for tables of ten). Bring a picnic but no drinks. A cash bar is available.
