STARS AND STRIPS (article first published : 2000-09-2)

Jacinta Richards, Catherine Mace and Calli Denton are Nina, Peaches and Candy. Three strippers, they are “sugar and spice and most things nice” with the exception of their professional jealousy and dressing-room bitchiness which fortunately doesn’t get in the way of their performances.

You can meet these colourful characters in Stars and Strips which opens at the Playhouse Cellar on September 20. With varying degrees of enthusiasm, the girls are intent on leaving their stripping club to use talents which expose their souls more than their bodies.

Designed for mass appeal, this production promises a calculated balance of seduction and slick deliverance with a script and plot that will scintillate the curious without entirely alienating the puritans! “Which is not to say there isn’t a huge helping of saucy innuendo and sexy suggestion,” says author and director Shireen James. “In fact silhouetted strips intermittently compliment the dressing room antics of the girls...all in very good taste of course!”

Jacinta Richards, Catherine Mace and Calli Denton play these respective characters with a professional touch and memorable enthusiasm. Well-known as a performer and now making his debut as musical director will be talented guitarist Colin Peddie. The choreography has been handled by ever-popular Heather Barclay-Whiffin of Cellar pantomime fame.

There will be a low-price preview on September 19. The show runs from September 20 to October 22. To book phone (031) 369-9524 or 369-9505 or book through Ticketweb 0861400500.
