CLIFF (article first published : 2008-01-23)

Very few recording artists can boast chart topping hits spreading over six decades from the 1950s. Sir Cliff Richard stands alone in this feat. The Dockyard Theatre is proud to present a musical tribute to this British pop legend.

Produced and directed by Dockyard owner Stuart Mey, the show simply entitled Cliff will cover the music spanning Cliff’s whole career, from his early days to his latest material. Mention Cliff and one automatically thinks of his backing band The Shadows. Under the musical direction of Bruce Boome, The Dockyard Show Band once again excels as they accurately recreate the unmistakable Shadows sound.

Playing the part of Cliff Richard is Dockyard favourite Andrew Jones, who has the vocals down to a tee. In this production, Mey brings back the ‘Ballies’ in the form of veteran guitarist Gerald ‘Hank Marvin’ Knott on lead guitar, Bruce ‘Jet Harris’ Boome on bass, Ian ‘Tony Meehan’ Webster on drums and Dave Arnold appearing as Bruce Welsh on rhythm guitar. Doing what Morrie Paramore did for Cliff and his Shadows is keyboard whizz Musa Vincent Mtetwa.

Cliff at the Dockyard Theatre in Musgrave Centre runs from January 11 to March 1. For bookings at this supper theatre venue, phone Melissa and Karen at the Dockyard on 031 201 9147.
