IAN & VIV (article first published : 2008-01-23)

Local showbiz doyen Ian von Memerty will take to the stage of The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway with his Latin and ballroom dancing champion wife Vivienne, as the pair reflects on their careers so far with an evening of music, dance and humour with one show only on January 22.

Twenty years ago, Ian and Vivienne met in Durban. Since then they have travelled the world, the story of their fight for their children’s lives having been followed by hundreds of thousands. Throughout all their troubles, they have performed all over the country.

In 2006 their performance together in Strictly Come Dancing, the hit TV series that Ian hosts on SABC2, was a standout and their numbers in the touring show Simply Ballroom got such raves that they decided to put a small show together featuring highlights from the last 20 years.

“Neither of us imagined that we would still be doing this in our forties – but the number of requests and offers we have are very flattering and they haven’t stopped,” said Ian. “I sometimes think the audience really just wants to see Viv – not only is she a beautiful dancer but she has a combination of sex appeal and elegance that is rarely seen”.

The show features highlights from Ian’s career – starting with highlights from his early shows at The Playhouse (It’s Still Rock ’n Roll to Us, Café Follies and A Tribute to Irving Berlin), passing through Muziek A La Carte, Joseph and The Rocky Horror Show and includes highlights from three of his biggest hits A Handful Of Keys, Big Band Blastand Captain Entertainment. Dance numbers that Ian and Viv perform together are Robert Palmer’s Kiss, All That Jazz from Chicago, Lady In Red by Chris de Burgh and a South African Pata Pata dance medley that is a knock-out.

This is the perfect show for anyone looking for an evening of real romance, glamour and good old fashioned showbiz! Tickets R100 booked on 031 566 3045, e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatres.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za for more information.
