SOLID GOLD (article first published : 2000-08-23)

Arnie Field and Clinton Philander, two of the most well-known and popular voices on the supper theatre circuit have joined forces at the Royal Hotel's Back Stage Theatre to present a musical tribute of “golden oldies”, featuring music from the 60's through to the 80's.

Despite the fact that Arnie Field and Clinton Philander have worked over the last five years or so in numerous shows with other performers - Jamaican Jam, Stayin' Alive, Good VibrationsCantina Tequila, to name a few - this is the first time they will work together in a two-man show.

Several of the numbers which were originally written and sung as solos have been reworked as duets, such as Tom Jones' It's not unusual and Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds. The choice of music is wide and includes songs from Frank Sinatra, The Drifters (Stand by Me), Lou Rauls as well as the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody.

"The emphasis of the show is on providing a feast of about 20 or so numbers - well sung, rather than an enactment and characterisation of various songs and singers," says Arnie Field. "The Backstage Theatre is the ideal setting for Solid Gold as we are in close proximity to the audience, making for an intimate evening of entertainment."

Solid Gold opens on August 29. Tickets at R110 includes a three course meal in the Royal’s true unbeatable style. Book through Royal Hotel reservations on (031) 304-0331.
