SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW NATION (article first published : 2000-08-21)

The Playhouse Cellar is set to stage Somewhere Over The Rainbow Nation - a hilarious one-man cabaret which takes a look at the hopes, dreams, aspirations and delusions South Africans have for the millennium. Vita-award winning actor James van Helsdingen kicks off his solo act on August 23. The show features original music along with a host of well-loved re-worked songs as well as highly amusing characters, entertaining sketches and satire - all set within the South African scenario.

"Whether you're Poppie the flower seller, or Brian-Johan the mechanic, we all aspire to greater things. Along the way we hope, fantasize and delude ourselves. We all have a dream deep down inside us, which we often forget about ... that quest for Utopia. But can it be attained?" asks van Helsdingen. As he explores South Africa’s aspirations for the future, he weaves a tale of enchantment, colourful characters, humour and music with fabulous costumes and wit.

James van Helsdingen received a Vita Award as well as the Cobus Roussouw Award for his performance in Equus. He has also played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Malcolm in Macbeth and recently performed the part of Bobby in Mark Graham's Love! Valour! Compassion! He has been freelancing in Johannesburg since 1992 and has worked on television, educational theatre and cabaret as well as musicals such as The Wizard of Oz (PACT) and Danny in Greece (TACT) at the Sand du Plessis Theatre.
