ROCK, RATTLE AND ROLL (article first published : 2007-08-20)

From the same group that created Yesterday Once More, comes a new show of music from the Fifties and Sixties, entitled Rock, Rattle and Roll.

The Rock 'n Roll era gave birth to delightfully upbeat numbers like Chantilly Lace, Good Golly Miss Molly, Tutti Frutti, Devil in Disguise and Sweet Little Sixteen, numbers which inspire the rest of the performance. The show includes a tribute to "the day the music died" with songs by those artists: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.

Also represented are Cliff Richard, The Platters and Elvis Presley, alongside popular numbers by the Mamas and the Papas, Patsy Cline, Dean Martin, Four Jacks and a Jill and Fats Domino. The famous numbers are sung, side by side with a few lesser-known ones.

The cast once again includes popular local singers Sandra Styles, Tamlyn and Ryan Calder, and introduces Derrick Zuma, a new face on the theatre scene, and one that will certainly be remembered! Musical Director and accompanist Helen Vermaak has given the good old numbers a fresh new sound guaranteed to delight and entertain. The show is directed by Peter Mitchell, veteran director of many musicals over the last twenty years.

Rock, Rattle and Roll takes the form of a picnic evening at the Hexagon Dive on the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, with the final performance taking place on August 23 at 19h00 for 19h30. Tickets R50 (R45pp for tables of 10). Bring a picnic supper, but no drinks. A cash bar is available. Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
