DRAGGED OUT (article first published : 2007-03-25)

“In June 2007, The Rhumbelow Theatre will celebrate six years. Our first show paid for the toilet alterations and some six years later we have a stunning little venue in Umbilo,” says Roland Stansell of the Family Players, the group that turned a little-used MOTH Shellhole into a popular performance venue.

“Who would have said that this venue would continue to thrive for these six years? The time has come to upgrade the venue again and this is for a complete revamp of all our lighting and to put in a professional lighting system. This will place us well on the map as a strong and well equipped Fringe Theatre offering opportunity for performers and shows alike. We have had over 70 shows, hosting some 100 performers over the last six years.”

The Family Players will perform a collection of the audience favourites in a show titled Dragged Out. It will feature Greg Baptie, Derek Pearce, Alan Quihampton, Gino Veronie and Roland Stansell.

“In its entirety, the money raised from this production will go to the new equipment. With a full year of theatre ahead we need to improve our facilities to ensure that it is a player in the entertainment scene in Durban for the next 20 years.”

Performances take place on March 29 (show at 19h30); March 30 and 31 (show at 20h00) and April 1 (show at 18h00). The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner.

Tickets R100. Take along food picnic baskets and braais will be available. There is limited secure parking and booking is essential. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). Now fully air-conditioned, Rhumbelow Theatre is situated in Cunningham Avenue off Bartle Road.

To book contact Roland on 031 205 7602 (h) or 082 499 8636, email roland@stansell.za.net or visit www.rhumbelow.za.net
