INFERNO (article first published : 2007-03-5)

The Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg is to host three top singers in a delightfully laidback musical concept titled Inferno Opera and Singalong which began six years ago in a restaurant in Johannesburg.

Artists would come along to sing the music they wanted to sing. From a fun evening of 'anything goes' developed a structured evening of anything really does go!

The programme commences with a concert presented in a very relaxed manner, which includes light opera and music from the musicals. Masterfully performed by top South African singers Angela Kilian, Lawrence Joffe and Raymond Tyack, these three highly trained voices inject new life into some much-loved evergreens. The introduction to each of these numbers is sometimes educational, sometimes humorous, but always original!

After the concert, the audience is invited to request the music they would like to hear and to sing along. There are no limits to the requests that may be made and it is remarkable to see these three talented performers demonstrate their skill in practically any musical genre. Once the audience has lost its inhibitions, the singing often continues late into the night!

“Inferno Opera and Singalong is unique in the way it makes the whole evening about the music, with no airs and graces, and with everyone having an opportunity to hear (and sing) the music that they love,” says the Hexagon management. “It is so rare to be able to interact with talented performers such as these and to test the limits of their skill. It will be a night to remember and one that you will want to revisit again and again.”

Inferno Opera and Singalong takes place in the Hexagon Dive Cabaret Venue on March 9 and 10 at 19h00 for 19h30. These are picnic evenings so bring your own food but no drinks as there is a cash bar. Tickets R100 (includes dessert and coffee). Tables of 10 are available, less than ten will be expected to share.
