DOUBLE DOSE (article first published : 2007-02-24)

The Westville Theatre Club is to present Double Dose, an evening of two one-act plays directed by Carole Brown.

The first half will open with the satire The Executive by Joe Carroll and Ivan Boniaszczuk, originally performed as y2k@end.come to great success at the Grahamstown Festival and the UKZN. This fast-paced work of comedy, hovering in the indistinct zone between philosophy and offence, sees Man move from one ridiculous exchange to another, trapped in a room haunted by the fear of “The Executive” door. This amoral construction is the source from which all of the madness of the world is unleashed. The showdown between two superpowers of culture and folklore provides a hilarious conclusion to this thought-provoking piece of theatre.

The second half sees the return of Joe Carroll’s critically-acclaimed work The Breeders Are Coming. Written in sitcom style, this black comedy delves deeply into the warped tapestry of sexual stereotypes, relationships, morality and the political status quo, effectively deconstructing prejudices by forcing audiences to laugh at them. It is a cutting exposition of the situation comedy genre, hailed as a form that traditionally offers a trite, humorous view of life, rather than the true jaundiced eye of reality.

It should be noted that the subject matter of the plays may cause distress. Parental guidance is advised for those under 16.

Double Dose runs from March 15 to 17 and again from March 22 to 24 at the Westville Theatre Club in Attercliff Road (next to the Westville Swimming Pool). Doors open at 18h30 with the show will start at 19h30. Patrons should bring their own food and drinks.

Tickets R30 booked through Carole on 076 705 8999 or e-mail: carole@marquee.co.za
