GODFREY JOHNSON FOR RHUMBELOW – CORRECTED VERSION (article first published : 2007-02-21)

Cape Town based singer, composer and performer Godfrey Johnson makes a welcome trip to Durban’s quaint Rhumbelow Theatre in his delicious one-man show intriguingly entitled Songs My Lover Forgot to Sing Me over the first weekend in March.

“He can go from camp to butch and back again in two easy steps. His versatility knows no bounds. Also, he does not put on frills and glitz - it is pure, uncontaminated material with twists and arrangements that make the songs his own. In 90 minutes, one is transported to so many places with this vast repertoire, and one is also blown away by his adaptability, going from the most tender of love songs to the hardest, even bawdy clucks on the piano when he does some of the lighter, often comedic stuff,” says Rafiek Mammon in his Tonight review.

Godfrey Johnson is equally comfortable appearing in his own shows as he is accompanying others. He has played for a host of musical luminaries (South African and international) including Irit Noble, Julian Clarey and Judy Page.

He has enjoyed a long professional relationship with living legend Pieter-Dirk Uys and managed the well-known Evita se Peron venue from 1997 to 2002. He directed Pieter Dirk Uys in Carnival and accompanied one of his characters, Bambi Kellerman, in Cabaret.

Performances of Songs My Lover Forgot to Sing Me take place on March 2 and 3 at 20h00 and March 4 at 18h30. The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner.

Tickets R60. Take along food picnic baskets and braais will be available. There is limited secure parking and booking is essential. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). Rhumbelow Theatre is situated in Cunningham Avenue off Bartle Road.
