ROCK ME AMADEUS (article first published : 2007-01-26)

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway turned five-years-old at the end of 2006 and it now launches into the first show of 2007 with Rock Me Amadeus in their recently upgraded the venue.

given the chance to rock and roll. The eccentric composer will be played by the equally eccentric Roelof Colyn, well known for his piano-playing and vocal talent in A Handful Of Keys.

The show is scripted and directed by his fellow performer, the inimitable Ian von Memerty and sees a new repertoire of rocked-up classics intertwined with popular rock and pop tunes. Audiences can expect to hear hits from the likes of Tina Turner, Queen, Stevie Wonder and Meatloaf.

The ten-piece cast includes vocalists Shelley McLean, Granville Michaels (both from the original run of Roll Over Beethoven at the venue) and Shaun van Staden. The band comprises Calli Thomson on keyboards, Josh Thatcher on guitar, Mark Freel on bass guitar, Shaun Reneke on drums, Dave Holland on saxophone and Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby on violin.

In order for patrons to celebrate the venue’s re-launch, and as a token of appreciation to the theatre’s loyal patrons, tickets for Rock Me Amadeus will cost the same as when The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway opened in 2001 – R70 per person!

Rock Me Amadeus runs until March 11 with Buy One Get One Free promotions on Tuesday nights and Sunday matinees. As the theatre now has 60 seats less, the venue urges patrons book early for all shows, but especially the Buy One Get One Free performances. Bookings and information on 031 566 3045.
