BOOK CLUB (article first published : 2006-12-2)

If you’ve ever wondered what actually goes on at the female version of “boys’ night out”, Book Club is about to enlighten you. In celebration of their 21 years together, the Gee Jays – Grant Bell, John Didlick and Gary McKenzie – have chosen their most popular show to brighten the festive cabaret circuit at the Heritage Theatre.

“Throughout South Africa women gather together on a weekly basis to ostensibly discuss books, but a lot more happens than meets the eye … or so we are led to believe!” says Gary McKenzie. “The Gee Jays set out, once again, to enlighten audiences about what actually goes on.”

That is until the vivacious Angela Dodds, who believes these old hacks lack an understanding of the book club experience, promptly interrupts them. The fun begins as she introduces the men to five book club women and they get to know what really goes on behind the scenes.

Book Club offers patrons the Gee Jays usual cheeky style of performance, wit, humour and even a bit of leg! As always, their comical comments on a variety of subjects, ranging from the search for the elusive “G” spot to the latest pick-up lines and male strippers.

Angela Dodds’ career highlights include performing in Richard Loring’s Girl Talk and Sun International’s Decadance and singing with the group Juke Box Live adds her unique comic touch to the mix.

The show includes songs such as Oh What A Night, Build Me Up Buttercup, High Upon A Pedestal, Man I Feel Like a Woman, Mustang Sally, The Lady Is A Tramp and Sex Bomb.

Book Club runs until December 31 at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest at the Heritage Market. Shows Tuesday to Saturday at 19h00 (meal) for the show at 20h30 with Sunday lunch time specials at 12h30 (meal) and the show at 14h00.

Ticket R165 (R140 on Tuesday nights and Sunday lunch). Also on offer are special festive season lunch time performances, as well as a New Year’s Eve party.
